BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Dr. Miguel G. Villarreal-Cervantes, has been a full-time professor at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) since February 2010.

Born in Veracruz, Ver., Mexico, Dr. Villarreal-Cervantes earned his bachelor’s degree with academic excellence in Electronic Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Veracruz in 2003. At the same time, he also studied a Technical Career in Computer Systems from 1998 to 2000 at the Centro de Computación Profesional de Golfo S. C. Moving to México city he attended at the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CINVESTAV-IPN) and earned his master and doctorate degrees in Electrical Engineering in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In 2010, he was working as a full-time professor in the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria en Ingeniería y Tecnologías Avanzadas of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (UPIITA-IPN) and one year later he was moved to a Research Center "Centro de Innovación y Desarrollo Tecnológico en Cómputo" of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CIDETEC-IPN) in which is currently working.

In 2012, he received for the first time the award SNI from the National System of Researchers (S.N.I.) in Mexico to belong as a member of the S.N.I. and he obtained an upper level "SNI level I" than the expected level "Candidate". From 2023 to 2027, he will promoted to level II of the National System of Researchers. On the other hand, in 2012, the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) approved his first National Project of Basic Research. He has also led Institutional Project from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional since 2011. In 2015, 2019 and 2022, he received a Research Award by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in the category "Research developed by young researchers", "Applied research" and "Basic research", respectively.

He is currently the mechatronic section chair in CIDETEC-IPN and CIDETEC node coordinator of the Expert Network on Robotics and Mechatronics of the IPN. He was one of the chair of the 11 International Congress Technological Trends in Computing 2015. He has been invited to participate in several evaluation committees, some of them are: Program Performance Incentives for Researchers from IPN, Basic Scientific Research Projects from CONACyT, Postdoctoral Studies Related to Strengthening National Quality Graduate and reviewer of articles in Scientific Journals, among others.

His research interests include mechatronic system optimization (mono and multi-objective optimization), nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms for developing optimal mechatronic systems, applications of computational intelligence in engineering, optimal controller tuning of mechatronic systems through metaheuristic optimization (offline and online optimization strategies) and robotics. He has published over 80 articles in journals and conference proceedings.
